Hosta, slugs and pugs

More hosta that I have planted on the northeast corner of my house. Last fall I had transplanted them from a deeply shaded area and now they are getting filtered sun. They have grown enough that they are now probably planted to closely together.

In this mix of hosta are: "Whirlwind", "Carnival", "Krossa Regal", "August Moon", "Pilgrim", "Gold Standard", "Green Gold", and "Frances Williams". Earlier in the spring I had decided to pull all the plant markers so I am now at a loss as to which one is which. This temporary lapse in gardening judgment while it could be attributed to my soon to be middle age, I like to believe the effects of the full moon. Yes, that's it, the full moon!

I have seen my first slugs this past week (sigh). This is not my picture, but these are the slugs we have in Indiana (sign again). A couple weeks ago, I read on someone's blog that they use copper pennies as a slug deterrent so I am giving it a try. I have used beer traps in the past, but that is now out of the question as one of my pugs started to imbibe. Not only did she drink the beer, but she also ate the slugs in the trap (sigh).
Metaldehyde is also not an option since it is poisonous to dogs and small animals. Garden tips from the Purdue University Extension website had this suggestion: "The old method of applying a pinch of salt directly to the back of a slug definitely works. The salt literally sucks the moisture right out of the slug and death follows quickly." And then I have heard about something called Diatomaceous earth which is an organic type pesticide.
Cricket. . .the beer drinking and slug eating pug (SIGH).

Your hostas have seen the light! It is so hard to judge how close to plant things. And those slugs can be awful. Try a mulch under them that has lots of small splintery pieces of wood. They don't like crawling over that.
